objective: develop engaging illustrations that effectively communicate the art and gestalt principles of similarity, proximity, continuance and closure. all illustrations were completed on the computer using the typeface platelet designed by Conor Mangat. the complete project brief (with objectives), design inspiration, development sketches, additional illustrations and more are all captured here—take a look.

Similarity: objects or designs that share characteristics will be naturally grouped in the mind as belonging together, often similarity and grouping will share design elements

In this piece I really liked how bold yet curvy the lower case k was, so I rotated one and took another and lined the two ks up to create a bold connected pattern to create similarity.
Proximity: Groups of similar objects or designs will create perceived relationships between them.

For proximity I used the lowercase f from the typeface platelet to create groups of letters that look like they are falling from above the frame. I was inspired to use f specifically because of the internet joke "press f to pay respects" having seen a tweet about it before working on this composition
Continuance: directs the viewers eyes in a line or curve and implies that the objects continue beyond the frame

For this I really wanted to create a radial design, and i found that the uppercase C from Platelet made a really cool pattern, looking almost like a doily that somebodies grandparents would have. As an added benefit this cool design also uses the property of continuance implies that the image continues on in both directions towards and away from the viewer.
Closure: The mind naturally draws connections between shapes and picks up on the lines that build patterns.

I found that the lowercase u when rotated 180° and nestled between the arms of the right-side up u makes a interesting building block for patterns, and when left with room between the groups makes a really good example for closure.
This is the 10.5"x10.5" image and uses the principle of closure. I used the capital C in the font platelet to create abstract patterns without connecting them making the viewer connect the curves themselves.
